As a child I lived in Chicago, where the raucous noises of elevated trains and emergency sirens, along with the surge of humanity on the wild, ever-changing streets, made up my everyday environment. Then my parents sent me to stay with friends in the country. I was scared to death. Silence at night, punctuated by the strange sounds of crickets, seemed much more menacing than urban cacophony. Although I grew to love the country, the drama of city life always delights me. Everywhere I go, photographing by available light, the streets are where the action is.
