Portraiture offers a way of observing people, a window onto how individuals act out their lives. Before turning to photography, I was on the other side of the camera. As an actor, I learned the importance of movement, gesture, and expression in becoming a character. Now, as a photographer, I use this insight to transform a brief, shared experience with a subject into a thoughtful and enduring portrait, the representation of what Henri Cartier-Bresson called the “inner look” of the subject.
